Annual vs Monthly Pricing: What the Data Says About Conversion

Annual plans reduce churn and improve cash flow — but do they convert as well as monthly? Here is what the data shows and how to present both options.

The debate between annual and monthly pricing is one of the most common in SaaS. The right answer depends on your product, your customer, and how you present the options — but the data across bootstrapped SaaS companies points in a clear direction.

What annual plans actually do

Annual customers churn at roughly 30–50% of the rate of monthly customers. The commitment of paying for a full year changes the psychology of cancellation — customers invested annually are more likely to work through friction rather than abandon the product. This is the primary reason to offer annual plans.

The cash flow argument

Annual plans provide upfront cash that monthly plans do not. For a bootstrapped founder, receiving 12 months of revenue at once means you can invest in growth without waiting for it to accumulate. The trade-off is a lower headline monthly price perception.

How to present both options

Show annual as the default. Display monthly pricing as an option, not the primary path. Frame annual savings as a total and as a monthly equivalent: "$29/year · ~$2.42/month" converts better than "$29/year (save 20%)." Concrete numbers outperform percentages in most tests.

What converts better at early stage

In the first 100 customers, monthly plans convert faster because they have lower commitment. As your reputation grows and customers trust the product more, annual conversion rates improve. Many founders start with monthly-first pricing and introduce annual plans around the $3K MRR mark.
