Automation Tools That Save Indie Founders 10 Hours a Week

Time is the scarcest resource for a solo founder. Every hour you spend on repetitive tasks is an hour you are not spending on building, selling, or thinking. Automation is not about sophistication — it is about identifying the things you do more than once and making them run without you.

Customer support: Crisp or Plain

Both offer saved responses, canned replies, and basic automation that handles the most common support questions without custom development. Setting up five canned responses for your five most common questions saves more time than almost any other single automation.

Email sequences: Resend or Customer.io

Automated welcome sequences, trial expiration reminders, and win-back campaigns run continuously without your involvement. A three-email onboarding sequence that fires over the first week after signup can significantly improve activation rates with zero ongoing effort.

Zapier or Make for everything else

Connecting tools that do not have native integrations — for example, sending a Slack notification when a new customer signs up, or adding a spreadsheet row when a payment is received — takes 20 minutes to set up and runs indefinitely. Most solo founders underuse these tools dramatically.

Monitoring: Better Stack or Uptime Robot

Automated uptime monitoring with SMS or Slack alerts means you find out about downtime before your customers do. The free tier on most monitoring tools covers what early-stage products need.

The highest-ROI automation

Automated weekly metrics emails — pulled from your analytics and payment processor — give you a consistent view of your business health without manually compiling numbers. Most founders who set this up say it is the automation they would give up last.
