How to Use Reddit to Launch Your Indie Product
Reddit can drive thousands of targeted visitors to a new product — or get you banned from the subreddits you need. Here is how to do it right.
Reddit is one of the highest-traffic product discovery channels available to indie founders — and also one of the easiest to misuse. The communities that would most benefit from your product will permanently ban you for spamming. Here is how to use Reddit for launches without burning your account or your reputation.
The rule: add value first
Every subreddit worth posting in has established norms around self-promotion. Most require either that you are a genuine community member first, or that you are posting something genuinely useful — not just promoting your product. Read the rules, check the pinned posts, and look at what types of posts get upvoted before you submit anything.
Subreddits worth knowing
- r/SideProject — built for indie product launches, self-promotion is expected
- r/entrepreneur — larger audience, more business-focused
- r/startups — works well for feedback requests framed as learning
- Niche subreddits for your specific problem — often the highest-quality traffic
How to frame your post
The posts that succeed on Reddit lead with the problem and the story, not the product. "I got frustrated with X, so I built Y — here is what I learned and here is the link if you want to try it" performs far better than "Introducing Y — the best tool for X."
Engage for at least 48 hours
Reddit threads with active founder engagement in the comments consistently outperform those where the founder drops a link and disappears. Answering every question, thanking every commenter, and engaging with criticism is not optional — it is the campaign.
