How to Launch on Product Hunt Without Burning Out

A Product Hunt launch can drive thousands of visitors in 24 hours. Most founders leave most of that value on the table. Here is how to do it right.

Product Hunt launches are one of the few marketing events where a solo founder can generate thousands of visitors, hundreds of signups, and meaningful press coverage in a single day. They are also one of the most frequently botched launch events in the indie hacker playbook.

When to launch

Product Hunt resets at midnight Pacific time, so launches that go live at 12:01am PT have the full day to accumulate upvotes. Tuesday through Thursday typically see the highest engagement. Avoid Mondays (carry-over from weekend) and Fridays (lower traffic).

What to prepare before launch day

  • A clear, specific tagline — not "the best tool for X" but what you actually do
  • A short demo video (60–90 seconds maximum)
  • A Maker comment explaining why you built it and what problem it solves
  • A special offer for Product Hunt visitors (discounted annual plan, extended trial)

How to get upvotes legitimately

Notify your email list, your Twitter followers, and any communities where you have genuine relationships on launch day. Do not mass-DM strangers asking for upvotes — it reads as spam and rarely works. The best upvotes come from people who have seen you build this product over time.

After the launch

Follow up with everyone who commented. Write a launch retrospective for Indie Hackers or your blog. The 48 hours after a Product Hunt launch are often more valuable than the launch itself if you handle them well.
